Well, for those who care (few of you) and those of you who read (even fewer)
I haven't posted anything new in a while. After being laid off from both the Marietta and Parkersburg Register newspapers, I hit the trail and took a teaching job in Oak Hill WV.
So basically EttaSports is down for the count. For a while.
Thanks for reading everyone, it has been great. I will miss this.

Ohio: A Football Wasteland.....at least for the weekend

It sucks to be from Ohio right now.
Not only do you have to deal with LA Times writer Bill Plaschke comparing the Buckeyes to Washington State,
With flags flapping and players leaping, they initially ran on to the field as famed Ohio State.
But they left it three hours later as another state entirely. A state of confusion. A state of disrepair. Washington State?
but, the Browns went quietly into the night against the Steelers, and the Bengals brought dysfunction to new levels in their home opener.
What are we to do for the next four months? If our football teams are doomed to be also rans this early, will the state of Ohio reduce itself to tear filled rewinds of the 2003 Buckeyes on ESPN Classic?
I am not an alarmist but a realist. I know OSU will be fine, they will get their 10 wins, and will be in a New Year's Day bowl (Citrus bowl after a loss to Penn State), but the Browns and Bengals are quickly forcing fans to question their season ticket purchases. I know I am.

Bengals Season On the Brink......Already
Thanks to Sunday's stellar offensive effort, the Bengals again fell to an opponent in disarray.
With their starting quarterback contemplating suicide, and one of the best defensive linemen in the league concussed, the Bengals defied convention and lost their home opener.
It was a miserable day in PBS. In addition to the loss, fans such as myself , were sent home with a wicked case of wind burn. The 50+ mph winds whipping through the stadium wreaked havoc on the passing and special teams games, and made for some interesting debris collections at midfield.
The excuses don't change the fact that Cincinnati is now 0-2 and is heading into its toughest portion of its schedule. Falling 17-10 to Baltimore and now 24-7 to Tennessee, the Bengals must now travel to the New York Giants, host Cleveland, travel to Dallas, back to the Meadowlands to play the Jets, then home to host the Steelers.
If the Bengals aren't 0-7, I will be shocked.
the worst run franchise in the NFL not located in Oakland is quickly moving into the Top 5 of the draft.
So who will the Bengals draft? Ray Malleaalaldaldga from USC or will they go running back? Beanie Wells perhaps?
Those fourth and ones would be a little bit easier with this guy wouldn't they?

Rants on behalf of Buckeye Nation
Bench Beanie the rest of the year.. biggest game of his career and he misses it, he should have played no matter what tressel said - I think it was a cover up because Beanie didn't want to play.he knew what would happen!!!!
Bench him because he has no heart - in a game like this you would play with one arm and one leg.
10 penalties, touchdown called back, Pick 6...just not their night.
Maybe Boeckman can get a mysterious injury like Zwick did. That worked out pretty well for us.
It's obvious to everyone but Tressel what the right decision is. I feel really bad for Boeckman, but it is plain as day that the potential for Pryor is off the charts whereas we know what we're getting in Todd Boeckman.
Carroll would win at all costs. (Not a negative comment either) He would absolutely play the one who gives the best chance of winning.

So, Buckeye fans, is this season a lost cause? Is this defense capable of an 11-1 season and BCS bowl? Does Boeckman's performance tonight make Pryor's coronation inevitable?
All questions that will be answered in the coming weeks.

Funny Line from Bill Simmons article this week
Q: As a long-suffering Bengals fan, I immediately recognized the Brady hit as reminiscent to Kimo von Oelhoffen's hit on Carson Palmer in the 2004 playoffs. After the injury, Palmer's doctors said "it was career-ending." Obviously, Palmer was able to recover, but in my opinion, he has never been the same. I certainly have never been the same. I still suffer from ghost pain and unexplained fits of crying. I'm probably not doing such a good job of consoling … uhmm … at least you're not a Bengals fan, right?
-- Josh, Charlottesville, Va.SG: (Smoking a Marlboro Light, walking around in a trenchcoat, drinking scotch …)
The day Carson went down still ranks as one of the worst days of my life. Seriously, I haven't gone from eurphoric to catatonic in such a quick time frame. After hearing that our tickets to the playoff game were going for 750 a piece on Stubhub, we talked about holding on to them, because it was going to be something we would always remember, and how the Bengals had the Steelers number this time.
Even now, it still hurts. I hate the Steelers, the fact the refs helped them win the Super Bowl only cements my thought that Bill Cowher sold what was left of his soul to satan.
Marietta (0-3) vs. Warren (2-1)
Local rivalry resumes this friday at Don Drumm Stadium in Marietta, as the Tigers hope to extend their winning streak over Warren to 7 games.
Marietta has been pounded in their opening three games, while Warren has surprisingly won two contests. Coach Andy Schob figures his club will be ready for Warren given the quality of their opening three opponents.
Warren is coming off a dominating defensive performance against Parkersburg South where the Warriors yielded negative one yards rushing, in their 14-7 win.
Will the Warriors be able to contain the Tigers multi-pronged attack?
Can Marietta's defense manage to stop an opponent's rushing game?
Carson backs down from 42-17 prediction....kind of

38-14
That's the latest prediction from current Bengals quaterback and former USC heisman trophy winner, Carson Palmer. After sending shockwaves through the buckeye state this summer with his hasty prediction of a USC rout of the beloved scarlet and grey, Palmer backed off a bit in an interview with Cincinnati Enquirer Bengals beat writer Mark Curnutte
Q: Are you betting Mike Brown, the huge Ohio State fan and, uh, your boss?
A: "I'm not going to make a bet with him. I'm going to pass on that one."Q: What's your prediction for Saturday?
A: "38-14? I should have said 42-17. Whatever you guys want to write is fine. It’s college football, anything can happen. I'm, of course, dying to see SC win. I think it'll be a close game early and I think SC will pull away in the third and fourth quarter."
Good to see number 9 isn't deterred by the legions of Buckeye fans who will be out to boo him. Then again, if you were quarterback of the Bengals, you would have to have thick skin.

What happens when your team can't stop the run?

This is your 4th quarter drive chart. The Bengals had the ball one time in the fourth, for 1 minute and 35 seconds. The other 13 minutes and change was the Ravens running all over the "retooled" Bengal defense.
Equally as depressing was the Browns defense in quarters 1 and 3. Just as the Bengals failed to stop unknown running backs from Baltimore, Cleveland dropped defenders into the secondary and still got worked over by Tony Romo. After throwing bomb after bomb to open receivers in the middle of the field, Romo did little but hand the ball to Marion Barber inside the five. Barber didn't get much resistance from the Browns front seven.
So Ohio, how was your Sunday?

I think I hate the Bengals right now, more than I like them.
My brother and I are already plotting a boycott of anything to give Mike Brown more money. Other than the sunk cost of tickets, we will spend ZERO dollars at PBS in terms of gear, concessions, parking, etc. We are going to find a way to leave the car elsewhere and walk in, and will stock our pockets of stuff to eat to avoid the concession lines.
As Bengal fans reaching the breaking point has come after many many years of futility. However, this time around it seems as if the team purposely got worse in the off-season. During the third quarter the debate actually came up in our house, where the Bengals will draft in the top 5. No doubt they will be there at this point, and it is only week 1.
I am hoping for 6-10 at this point.
If we had our choice, the stadium would look like this next week. Maybe Mike Brown would get the message, however, we think he would somehow still make money.

Online Petition: Coach Bill Bauer come back!
If you leave a comment with your name, I will add it to the roll.
It is my hope that if we gather enough names, this would be reason enough for him to get back into coaching and in turn save what is left of the Marietta Marlins.
